Let refugees learn: email your MP!
Learning English is the key to refugees being able to rebuild their lives and integrate into their new communities, find work and meet new people. The Government says it agrees.
However, ministers’ warm words are in stark contrast to the resources available for refugees to learn English.
Funding for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in England shrank dramatically over the past decade, from £212.3m in 2008 down to £105m in 2018 – a real terms cut of almost 60%.
With ministers reviewing future spending levels, now is the time to tell the Government to change course.
Write to your MP and ask them to tell the Education Secretary that only new investment can ensure that refugees are able to access good quality English language lessons.
